Saving Money with Car Imports

While the UK economy struggles to get back on its feet, residents are looking for deals anywhere they can find them. This is especially true when it comes to big purchases like cars and homes. That is why so many people have purchased foreclosed homes at bank auctions in recent months.

But what about automobiles? What do you do if you desperately need a car but can’t afford one? One often overlooked, but viable option is to purchase a used vehicle in another country, especially one that is known for producing high quality autos like Germany. In this brief article we are going to explain what you need to do to import a car into the UK.

The first thing to do is to inform the car dealer that you are planning to have the car imported and ask them if they can fill out the paper work at their end. Then you need to actually pay for the vehicle. The easiest way to complete payment is with a high limit credit card. You can also wire the money through your bank or send a certified cheque or money order.

Once you have paid, the dealership will send the deed and title and you can begin the process of importing the car into the UK. Of course, you will have to travel to the country and drive the car home, which means that you will also have to purchase insurance for the trip.

After you have insurance, you will need to contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and ask for the forms for car imports . Then you will need to get a European Certificate of Conformity from the car maker. You will actually have to contact the manufacturer to obtain this document.

Lastly, you will need to contact the Ministry of Transportation and request a Mutual Recognition Certificate. Once you receive the certificate, fill out the forms and take all of the documents to the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing agency. In about a week they will mail you the documentation you need to get UK license plates, insurance, and registration.
